Born in Osaka, Japan, and based in New York since 2004, Filipski brings together Japanese sensibility, contemporary art, and the layered visual language of New York. Her work is defined by a refined approach to color, texture, composition, and materiality, creating rugs that function not simply as furnishings, but as distinctive elements within a space.

Her artistic foundation began in childhood through Japanese traditional performing arts. From the age of seven, Filipski performed Shigin, a traditional form of Japanese vocal expression rooted in classical poetry. Performing on stage in kimono from an early age immersed her in the aesthetics, discipline, and cultural traditions of Japan, an experience that continues to inform her sensitivity to color, rhythm, balance, and form today.

Her creative path later expanded into contemporary music. For nearly two decades, she worked as a jazz vocalist, composer, and songwriter in Japan and the United States. This musical background continues to influence her approach to design through rhythm, movement, repetition, balance, and improvisation.

Working with skilled rug makers and manufacturers internationally, Filipski develops original rug designs for residential, hospitality, and commercial interiors. Her practice combines artistic direction with material exploration and craftsmanship, with a particular focus on high-quality natural fibers including New Zealand wool.

Through SumiYuri Studio, she continues to build a creative dialogue between Japan and New York, bringing an artist’s perspective to contemporary rug design and creating pieces with a strong sense of identity, atmosphere, and place.
